The Whangarei District Airport is situated around 10 minutes drive from the city centre in the pleasant harbour suburb of Onerahi. This extremely convenient location means that it is only 2 or 3 minutes drive from shops, restaurants and accommodation. It is a wholly domestic airport operating flights from Auckland, Wellington and other smaller airports in New Zealand. There are also two recreational flying clubs located there, so if you are lucky enough to have your own plane, why not fly in for a few days?
The single storey terminal, whilst small and compact has all the facilities you need, including access for the disabled and a cafeteria offering drinks and snacks. There is a bus service to the centre of town and taxis are also available for the short journey. All of the major car rental companies are represented in the arrivals hall so you can hire a car and make the most of your stay in this beautiful area of the country.

This area on the Pacific coast is a paradise for nature enthusiasts, there are more than 100 bays and beaches and the Poor Knights and Hens and Chickens groups of islands are just a short sail away. These are a haven for all kinds of unique flora and fauna, with warm tropical currents bringing aquatic visitors from further afield. Daily dive boats leave from Tutukaka for the Poor Knights Islands which Jacques Cousteau once described as being one of the top ten dive sites in the world.
There are several “must dos” in Whangarei and it's surrounding area, Visiting the Poor Knights Islands is top of the list, even if you don't dive you can still be part of the marine experience by taking a luxurious cruise to take in the world's largest sea cave and relax on one of the many idyllic beaches. A visit to the Bream Head Forest Reserve is also high on the list, one of the country's premier coastal forest reserves, you can follow a 2km trek to the Smugglers Cove passing historic sights from the both the early Maori civilisation and World War II. For a quick fix of natural beauty if your time is limited, the Whangarei Falls are just an easy 5km drive out of the city centre and are reputed to be the most photographed falls in New Zealand.
