Wellington Airport Mini Guide
About Wellington Airport
Wellington International Airport is 8km from the city and an easy drive using the Mount Victoria tunnel. If you have hired a car you will find the car hire offices on level 0 of the main terminal. Seven airlines have flights into the airport and they fly from eighteen destinations in New Zealand. International flights are available from Melbourne and Sydney as well as Brisbane and Fiji.
There is an information station at the airport if you need to book a hotel or find out more about the city’s attractions. If you run out of dollars, there are ATMs and a currency exchange desk and the airport offers free Wi-Fi. You can eat at one of the ten food outlets which have everything from multi-ethnic curries to fish and chips or just grab a coffee and a sandwich. The airport has eleven shops too, where you can stock up on locally made goods and swimwear, as well as your duty free.
About Wellington City
To get acquainted with the city, take a hop on/hop off bus tour with Wellington City Sights and find out more about the city’s culture and heritage at Te Papa National Museum. Then take a trip on the Kelburn cable car from Lambton Quay to the Botanic Gardens, where you can take a picnic and stroll around the exhibits. At Oriental Parade you can sunbathe on the beach and later, enjoy a meal at one of the many fine restaurants there.
For something a little different, catch a ferry from Queens Wharf to Soames Island, previously a quarantine station for both people and animals and an internment centre for dangerous criminals. If you love animals, head out to Red Rocks and see the seal colony and visit Zealandia to see rare wildlife from New Zealand. Tours are very popular for visitors to the city, for example you can take a ‘wild about chocolate’ tour or ‘shopping deluxe’ tour with Wild About Wellington Tours or Zest Food Tours.
Travelling out of the city, you should spend a day visiting the wineries in the wine growing regions of Wairarapa and Martinborough, to sample some of the best wines in the world, just make sure you have a designated driver! Alternatively, you can take a guided tour with Tranzit. Drive out to the Kapti Coast or Natural Coast, enjoy the lush scenery and take a walk on the beach or just soak up some sun.
