Tauranga is a town situated on the Bay of Plenty in North Island. It has a lengthy harbour area sitting opposite Matakana Island and next to Mauao, an extinct volcano. During summer, the town becomes a popular resort as holidaymakers head for the beaches at Mount Maunganui and surf or swim.

About Tauranga Airport
Tauranga Airport is just a few minutes away from the town and you can book a shuttle bus or taxi to take you to Tauranga, if you do not have a hire car. Flights are operated by three airlines from eight destinations in New Zealand, including the cities of Wellington and Auckland. You can also fly from Christchurch, in South Island.
The airport is small with basic facilities, but has everything you need. There is internet access and a café, if you need a snack before your flight. The Koru Club Lounge is available to Gold Star Alliance members or Air New Zealand passengers travelling business class. If you have time on your hands, the Classic Flyers Museum at the airport, is well worth a visit and you can eat at their Avgas Café. For the adventurous, you can try skydiving and paragliding at Tauranga Airport.
About Tauranga
Mount Maunganui is the most well known part of Tauranga and famous for its beaches. You can sunbathe and swim or try kite surfing and learn to scuba dive. In the town, you can shop for surf gear and stop off at one of the many coffee shops that line the main street. If you are interested in art, the Tauranga Art Gallery has exhibitions by local and international artists and for a little history, see the Historic Village on 17th, a collection of heritage buildings in pretty grounds.
To see amazing views of the town and coast, hike up Mauao or visit the White Island, an active volcano. From the harbour, you can take dolphin watching tours or fishing trips for something more relaxing or you can swim with dolphins at the marina. At night time, head for ‘The Strand’ where you will find plenty of bars and restaurants and lots of local nightlife.
Outside of town, drive out to Kati Kati and see the Bird Gardens – a wetlands area with gardens and native birdlife. In Kati Kati you can soak in the hot springs and take a tour of the vineyards and tastes the local wines. Te Puke is in the heart of the orchard region and famous for its kiwi fruit and tangelos. You can also visit the Comvita Centre in Te Puka and see how the local Manuka honey is produced and try some honey ice cream. For quiet beaches in lazy seaside villages, drive out to Papamoa or Pukehina and stop for lunch and a wine tour at Mills Reef Winery, just outside of Tauranga.
