Queenstown is a resort town in the Otago region of South Island and is situated on Lake Wakatipu, a glacial lake bordered by the Remarkable Mountain range. It is thought that the town got its name from a gold digger, who said that the town ‘was fit for Queen Victoria’.

Queenstown Airport Mini Guide

About Queenstown Airport
Queenstown Airport is just 10km from the town, in Frankton, Otago. There are flights from the major cities in New Zealand and regular flights from Sydney too. Brisbane and Melbourne have seasonal flights to Queenstown, during ski-season. To get to the town, taxis are available or you can take the Connectabus service 11/12 that leaves the airport every 20 minutes. Car hire is a good option there, not only for the transfer but to really see the beauty of the area.

At the airport you will find an ATM and a currency exchange desk for those extra dollars and there is an internet lounge and free Wi-Fi. If you missed your breakfast, go to the Airport Café, there you can enjoy mountain and runway views too. There are a selection of shops at the airport, where you can buy locally made clothing and gift items, such as handmade chocolates.

About Queenstown
The town is mostly known for its adventure sports, so whether you want to snow board and sea kayak or skydive, you will find something for you. For the less adventurous you can play golf and horseback ride or go fishing. If you are feeling brave take the canyon swing or the skyline gondola to Bob’s Peak, where you will see amazing views of the mountains and lakes. For something a little less taxing, from Queenstown Wharf you can take a trip on the lake on the TSS Earnslaw – a 100 year old steam ship that is still fired by coal.

A must do is a scenic flight by plane or helicopter to Milford Sound, an area of untouched wilderness. There you can see waterfalls over fjords and rainforest sits next to snow capped mountains. If you need to keep your feet on the ground you can drive there or take a coach trip.

If you are a bit of a foodie, why not take a wine tour and visit the wineries in the Otago region – you can sample the wines, find out how they are made and enjoy an a la carte lunch there too. Appellation Central and Queenstown Wine Trail are just two companies who offer such tours. Out of Queenstown you can also visit Arrowtown, a historic gold mining town and take the 50 minute drive to Glenorchy, one of the top scenic drives in the world.
