Napier is the site of the Hawkes Bay Airport, the gateway to the premier food and wine area of New Zealand. Named after Sir Edward Hawke, the first Lord of the Admiralty, by Captain Cook after he sailed into the bay on HMS Endeavour in 1769, this year round destination is now a popular tourist spot for both food and wine buffs and nature lovers.

Hawkes Bay or Napier Airport was built on the land reclaimed from the sea after the 1931 earthquake, it was officially opened as an airport in 1964 and is often known as Napier Airport because of it's close proximity to the town. Today it handles domestic flights only from Auckland and Christchurch together with several flights from smaller airports throughout New Zealand. As it does only handle domestic flights it is quite a small airport, nevertheless there are the usual facilities necessary, including a cafe to give you a last taste of the fine wine and food from Hawkes Bay before you board your flight.
If you are want to explore the Hawkes Bay area fully, then you can easily hire a car at the airport, all the major car rental companies are represented there in the arrivals hall.
