Hamilton is in the Waikato region of North Island and was originally a series of Maori villages – this heritage can be seen throughout this inland city. In Maori it was named Kirikiriroa but was renamed in 1864 when British settlers arrived. Nowadays, Hamilton is a cosmopolitan city with a large student population and an ideal base for exploring everything North Island has to offer.

Hamilton International Airport is 10km out of the city, but you can get a shuttle bus or taxi, if you don’t have a hire car. Five airlines fly into the airport, mostly operating domestic flights to ten destinations in New Zealand. Pacific Blue has flights from Brisbane too, connecting the island to Australia.
The airport has one terminal with basic facilities. Wi-Fi and internet kiosks are available and there is an ASB bank for all your money services. You can buy a book or last minute travel items from Paper Plus or if you are travelling outside of New Zealand you can browse for gifts at the Duty Free store. If you are hungry, have a coffee and a snack at Velutto Café and Bar and enjoy the views of the runway. The Koru Lounge is available for Air New Zealand passengers travelling business class. The Hamilton Airport Motor Inn is a short walk away, should you need somewhere to stay.
About Hamilton
The city has a vibrant café and bar scene as well as plenty of attractions to keep you busy. Hamilton Gardens are very popular, you can explore the different gardens - just two are the Italian Renaissance Garden and the Chinese Scholar Garden. At the entrance you will see the Earth Blanket sculpture that celebrates Maori heritage and symbolizes protecting mother earth. To discover more about the Maori’s visit the Waikato Museum, where you can see a Te Winika, a traditional war canoe.
For a family day out, visit Hamilton Zoo, it is home to 600 types of native animals from New Zealand. Take a stroll around Hamilton Lake and have a picnic in the parklands. In the centre of the city, you will see the unusual statue of Riff Raff, a character from the musical ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’ written by Richard O’Brien, who lived and worked in the city. If you crave adventure you can take a hot air balloon trip or go kayaking on the Waikato River.
Further afield and just a 20 minute drive, you can visit the Maori town of Ngaruawahia and home to the King Tuheitia Paki. A must see is Matamata, famous for having ‘Lord of the Rings’ filmed there and you can visit the Hobbiton movie set. Raglan is a seaside town, 50 km from the city and known for its surf beaches and beautiful bays. For something different visit the glow worm Waitomo Caves and soak in the mineral pools at Te Aroha.
