Dunedin is the 2nd largest city in South Island and founded in 1848. Its name comes from the Scottish Gaelic ‘Dun Eideann’ meaning Edinburgh, capital of Scotland. The city is a rare mix, the harbour and hills around the city are the remains of an extinct volcano and the city itself was a recreation of a ‘romantic’ Edinburgh.

About Dunedin Airport
Dunedin International Airport is situated 30km away from the city in Momona. It has a single terminal and is the 3rd busiest airport in South Island. Mostly the airport operates domestic flights to four destinations in New Zealand and there is one international flight to Brisbane. Flights to Sydney and Melbourne are seasonal. The airport is small but has all the facilities you need. If you have forgotten anything you can buy it at Paper Plus or if you need gifts, take a look in Try Otago. There is an information desk, if you have any enquiries and there are internet kiosks available for a charge. If you need something to eat, there are 4 outlets to choose from.
Transfers to the city are limited to shuttle buses and taxis, so hiring a car is always a good option and often cheaper. This will also allow you to visit the beautiful Otago Peninsular and see the wildlife colonies. You can pick up your car from the car hire offices at the airport, just outside the main entrance to the terminal.
About Dunedin
A walk around the city centre will give you a feel for the city and its proud Scots heritage. Otago Settlers Museum was established in1898, fifty years after the city was founded and built to celebrate the anniversary of the city. It is one of the most important social history museums in New Zealand. For a little quiet in the city, go to the Botanical Gardens and see the themed gardens and aviary. If you have a sweet tooth you will enjoy a tour of Cadbury World, the biggest producer of chocolate in the country or do a tour and tasting at Speights Brewery.
Larnach Castle is the only castle in New Zealand, it has a scandalous and tragic history and has been recently restored. Take a trip on the Taeri Gorge Railway, a scenic trip through the gorge using tunnels and viaducts built over 100 years ago. Drive out to the Otago Peninsular and discover picturesque hamlets and pretty beaches like Allans Beach. There you will also find colonies of seals and penguins, as well as the rare albatross. On the peninsula you will see the Otakou Marae, a Maori meeting house and church that gave the area its name.
