Christchurch is known as the ‘Garden City’ and has a very English feel to it, especially the older buildings and cathedral along Worcester Boulevard and you can even take a punt along the River Avon. It is a popular destination for Asian students who go there to learn English.
Christchurch Airport Mini Guide
About Christchurch Airport
Christchurch International Airport serves South Island and is New Zealand’s 2nd largest airport. Currently, 11 airlines fly into Christchurch from destinations in Australia and south east Asia and there are domestic routes also.
The airport was recently redeveloped and has a new terminal building - construction should finish at the airport in 2012. Bus services operate every half hour into the city or you can book a shuttle bus. If you hired a car you can pick up the keys from the car hire desks in arrivals. There are 35 shops at the airport to keep you busy including duty free boutiques. If you need to eat before your flight you will find everything from sushi to noodles or fast food. Opposite the airport is the Antarctic Attraction, an interactive experience to help you find out more about this unique area.
About Christchurch
There is still a lot to see in the city, despite the effects of the earthquake in the city centre. The Cathedral was considerably damaged and is being rebuilt. In the meantime, there are plans to build a cardboard cathedral not only as a place of worship but as a tourist attraction. At the Canterbury Museum you can see colonial and Maori artefacts as well as finding out more about the natural history of the area. For art lovers, there is the new and modern Christchurch Art Gallery with some 5,000 items on display. At the Air Force Museum you can learn about the history of the Royal New Zealand Air Force and see replicas of fighter jets. Ferrymead Heritage Park is a recreated Edwardian town with museum that shows how people used to live here.
For a quiet day in the city, head for the Botanic Gardens and Hagley Park, together they make the 2nd largest city park in the world, after New York’s Central Park. To see great views of the city, drive up the Summit Road – from there you can also see the Alps and Lyttleton Harbour. Do watch out for the sheep though!
Heading out of the city, take a trip out to Akaroa and swim with the dolphins or take a dip in the hot pools at Hanmer Springs. Lyttleton is well worth a visit for it’s charm and beautiful harbour and it is still a bustling port. Drive out to Arthur’s Pass National Park and discover the historic alpine highway.
