Timaru Airport Mini Guide
About Timaru Airport
Timaru Airport or Richard Pearce Airport as it is also known, is just a few minutes away from the town. Air New Zealand has flights from Wellington to Timaru and these are operated by Eagle Airways. Occasionally, there are flights to Oamuru and Christchurch. The airport is small with limited facilities, but all you need for a short flight. Taxis are available at the airport to take you into the city or you can hire a car. This is a good idea not only for your transfer but to thoroughly explore the South Canterbury region.
About Timaru
Caroline Bay and the Piazza, are the most famous attractions in Timaru. The Piazza has a walkway with gardens and cafes and recreational facilities for families. At the sand beaches of Caroline Bay you can sunbathe and swim or surf, but for serious surfing, hit the waves at Patiti Point. To find out more about the town, visit the South Canterbury Museum where there are exhibits of fossils and Maori rock art as well as information about Timaru’s maritime history.
The Aigantighe Art Gallery has a collection of works from all over the world from the 16th century to the present day and there is a sculpture garden too. For a little peace and quiet, take a stroll in the Timaru Botanic Gardens, they date from 1864 and have fine collections of native tree ferns and roses. For something a little different, you can learn how beer is made (and have a taste!) at the DB Mainland Brewery. If golf is your thing, you can play a round at Timaru Golf Club or the Highland Golf Club.
Just outside of town is the Centennial Park Reserve where there is a 3.5km walkway through Otipua Creek. Take a drive out to the charming inland village of Geraldine with its pretty main street and historic buildings, it also has a thriving arts community. Spend a day at Pleasant Point, where you can take a trip on the old steam railway. You will also find examples of Maori rock art here and you can try local wines at the Opihi Vineyards.
